Cabinet approves new rubbish plan 2016
The cabinet has approved a master plan to dispose of some 30.5 million tonnes of accumulated rubbish nationwide by 2019 and handle new waste more effectively. The plan was approved at Tuesday's weekly cabinet meeting, according to government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd.

The plan aims to eradicate accumulated waste; develop a new garbage management model; create more effective garbage disposal measures; and drive campaigns to foster public discipline in garbage management, said Maj Gen Sansern.

Thailand has been struggling to get rid of the 30.5 million tonnes of garbage and waste. So far, about 20 million has been disposed of. Once the master plan is up and running, the remaining rubbish will be gone by 2019, he said.

In addition to existing general and toxic waste management programmes implemented by local administration organisations, the government plans to implement 115 new waste management projects at a cost of 2.6 billion baht, he said.

With the new projects, the government's disposal capacity is expected to increase significantly.
